Endoscopy
Endoscopy is performed in the Gastrointestinal Endoscopy / Minor Procedures Unit on Level 2 of Health Sciences North Hospital.

Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD)
Upper Endoscopy: An upper endoscopy is a procedure that we perform to examine the esophagus, stomach, and part of the small intestine for abnormalities. It involves a tube, called an endoscope, that we pass through the throat of a patient and into the gastrointestinal system. It is used to diagnosis and treat conditions like gastroesophageal reflux disease, ulcers, abnormal cell growth, bleeding, and blockages. The benefits include accurate diagnosis and treatment. The risks include hemorrhage, inflammation, aspiration, and perforation.
Colonoscopy
Lower Endoscopy:A lower endoscopy is similar to an upper endoscopy, except it examines the lower part of the small intestine. The endoscope is passed through into the rectum and advanced to the cecum to make a diagnosis and treat abnormalities in the lower portion of the gastrointestinal tract. Indications being to diagnosis and treat anal fissures. The benefits include accurate diagnosis and treatment. The risks include perforation, bleeding, inflammation, pain and infection.
Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
ERCP: ERCP is an abbreviation for Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography, which is a procedure during which Dr. Shum examines the bile and pancreatic ducts. It is used to diagnose and treat diseases such as gallstones, cancers, and pancreatitis. The benefits of ERCP are accurate diagnosis and treatment. The risks include infection, narrowing or blockage of the ducts, bleeding, perforation, and pancreatitis.
